Formulas are not populating

We recently upgraded from v4.00.46 to v5.10.28. Sometimes(doesn't seem to happen every time) when we create a .xlsx(haven't tried .xls), our formulas do not add up. They are displayed. If you open the file in Excel, click on the cell, press F2 and enter, the totals are populated. What is going on with this.
